Redundancy Configurations: N+1 and 2N

Redundancy Configurations: N+1 and 2N

In the world of mission-critical consulting, we talk in terms of “N.”

  • N: The minimum power needed to run the show.

  • N+1: The minimum plus one backup module. If you need 100 amps, you have two 100-amp generators available.

  • 2N: A fully redundant, mirrored system. Two completely separate power paths (Feed A and Feed B) running to every piece of equipment. If Feed A (Grid) dies, Feed B (UPS/Gen) is already there. High-end servers and network switches have dual power supplies for this exact reason. For a church, achieving 2N might mean having the FOH console on a different circuit breaker than the stage box, so a single tripped breaker doesn’t kill the whole system.
